Limited pilot

The volunteerjourney

Every step between sending the form and the day you are one of us, with a signed certificate that carries your name.

This is a limited trial. We are working it out together, and things will change.

Applications are closed for now

We are not taking on new volunteers at the moment. Applications we have already received are not affected. Please check back later.

Certificate of Contribution

This is to certify that

Why volunteer with us

  • It actually helps

Every company that says yes hands a service back to people who lost it.

  • Real work, with a team

Four or five of you take on blocked companies together, start to finish.

  • Proof you can show

A signed certificate, and a recommendation on your own profile.

  • A way into work

Help with your CV, and your name put forward to SYNC.

Act one

Getting in

  1. You apply

Seats are limited and the form is the only thing a lead sees, so take your time over it.

One email, and the invite is in it

    • Unblock Syria

      We have your application

    • Unblock Syria · General

      Your invitation to join

You need to speak Arabic. Almost everything in the groups happens in Arabic.

  2. A lead picks you from the pool

    Depends on availability and fit

Leads read the pool constantly, looking for what their teams need. If one picks you, you join the volunteers group.

Leads and volunteers, talking about real work

You stay in the pool. Not being picked yet is about availability, not about you, and other ways to help need no application.

  3. Your lead gives you a task

Small, real, and agreed with your lead. It might be finding something that works from inside Syria in place of a blocked service, checked properly: signup, payment, the feature itself. Whatever it is, you send it in with evidence.

Act two

Doing the work

  1. Your lead puts you on a team

Once the task is done well

A lead and four or five people who take on blocked companies together, start to finish. You test what is blocked, write to the company, and follow up. This is the point you stop being an applicant.

The leads, talking to each other

    • Lead

Owns the company, keeps it moving

    • TesterInside Syria

Verifies what's blocked, re-tests after changes

    • Communicator

Writes the tickets, emails and follow-ups

    • Networker

Finds employees who can raise it internally

Your lead works out who does what. The shape of the teams, and how much each one carries, is still settling.

  2. Your page starts filling up

Your name links to a page of your own, and badges land on it as you earn them.

    The set, so far

    • First Steps

You finished onboarding and made your first accepted contribution in any team — a report, an outreach message, a correction, a translation, or a published piece.

    • Still Here

You remained an active Unblock Syria volunteer for 90 consecutive days, meeting the organization's active-volunteer definition.

    • Day One

You joined Unblock Syria within the first 30 days after its public launch, as part of the first volunteer group.

    • Day Zero

You joined Unblock Syria during its founding stage before the public launch.

    • First Contact

You sent your first outreach message to a target company on behalf of Unblock Syria.

    • First Response

You received the first official written response from a company to an outreach request.

    • Human Contact

You reached a named person at a company — with a role and a direct channel — beyond automated support, who could review, act on, or escalate your request.

    • Internal Ally

You found an employee inside a target company who actively supported our unblocking request with at least one concrete action — an internal escalation, guidance, or sponsorship of the case.

    • Carving in Stone

You kept contacting the same company after previous attempts received no response — at least 5 logged follow-up attempts spanning at least 2 weeks, counted from your first logged unanswered attempt.

    • On the Agenda

You got a company to confirm — in writing or publicly — that it opened a formal review of its blocking decision, tied to a case you worked on.

    • Surge

You stepped up when urgent work needed to be done fast, delivering accepted contributions within the window declared.

    • Unblocked

You were an active member of the team handling an advocacy case, with at least one logged contribution, when access to the service was restored — fully or partially.

    • On the Radar

You reported 3 services that weren't tracked yet — new blocked services now on Unblock Syria's radar.

    • Ground Truth

You tested services from inside Syria and had 10 of your what-works reports accepted by the Testing team.

    • Plan B

You found an alternative to a blocked service, verified from inside Syria that it works — fully or with known limitations — and submitted your findings.

    • Homegrown

You found a Syrian-built service, verified its basic facts from inside Syria, and published it on Unblock Syria as an alternative to a blocked global service.

    • Byline

At least one story published by Unblock Syria — on the site or its official channels — carried your name as the credited author.

    • Localization

You had 3 accepted contributions — new translations, reviews, or rewrites that made Unblock Syria's content clearer and more natural in Arabic or Kurmanci.

    • Red Pen

You submitted 3 corrections to service details — a wrong link, name, or outdated detail — that were verified and applied to the service's record.

    • Legal Ground

You built the legal case for unblocking: you documented the exemption, licence, sanction carve-out, or regulation that the Legal team accepted and cited in a real request to a company.

    • Green Light

Your internal review gave Unblock Syria the green light: at least one publication or outgoing request passed your legal or compliance check before it went out.

    • Plus One

You referred a new volunteer who joined Unblock Syria, and became an active contributor.

    • Signal Boost

You shared Unblock Syria campaigns or reports through your personal network, driving at least 100 visits to our content through a tracked link — or a post you created reached an exceptionally large audience, documented.

    • Bridge

You made accepted contributions — logged in our team records — with at least two different teams.

    • Open Door

You mentored a new volunteer through their first accepted contribution, helping them understand the team's workflow and start contributing.

    • Team Lead

You led an Unblock Syria team and were responsible for coordinating its members.

Act three

What you take with you

  1. You earn your certificate

Signed, numbered, and checkable at a permanent link. It records what you did.

Most companies never answer anyone. The certificate records what you did, not whether they replied. We are still settling who exactly earns one, and the first group will help us work that out.

    Certificate of Contribution

    This is to certify that

    Your name here

has volunteered with Unblock Syria, and has corresponded with technology companies about the access restrictions facing people inside Syria.

    To whom it may concern,

Your name volunteered with Unblock Syria as a communicator.

They wrote to technology companies about the access restrictions facing users inside Syria, tracked every reply, and recorded what each company said.

They corresponded in English and Arabic, and trained newer volunteers.

    Sincerely,

    Unblock Syria

  2. We say your name out loud

If you want to be named

A shoutout on our accounts, with your name on it.

    Unblock Syria

Shoutout to Your name, who kept writing to a company everyone else had given up on and got a real answer out of them. This is what the work looks like.

  3. We write you a LinkedIn recommendation

Your team lead writes it, about work they watched you do. It stays on your profile.

  5. We put your name forward to SYNC

SYNC matches Syrian talent with employers worldwide. We send them your profile with our star on it.

  6. You could end up leading a team

    If it shows

Work well with people and it gets noticed. You shadow a lead first, then run a team of your own.

    • Team Lead

You led an Unblock Syria team and were responsible for coordinating its members.

    • Four or five people, and the companies you take on
    • You read the pool and pick who joins you
    • Access to the admin dashboard
  7. And the part that isn't a document

Small teams of motivated people who care whether it works. You learn to work with people like that, and you make friends doing it.

Every company that says yes hands a service back to people who were shut out of it: students who cannot reach their course, freelancers who cannot get paid, families who cannot make a call.

Act three complete

Before you apply

  • This is volunteering, not a paid job.
  • The programme is still being built, so how it works and what the roles are may change.
  • Places are limited. We choose by what the teams need, and by your skills, experience and interests.
  • What you do, and how much time it takes, depends on the role you are given.
  • The certificate records your volunteering and what you actually contributed. It is not an academic qualification, and not a professional accreditation from anyone else.

We want this to be clear, fair and worth your time from day one.
