## About

Digital wallet and contactless payment service for online and in-store purchases

## Activity summary

Partially blocked in Syria. As of March 2026 the informational pages load, but the Google Wallet service fails with a server error when users try to set one up, leaving it unusable; earlier testing in February 2026 found it fully blocked. A community volunteer contacted Google in February 2026 with no response. Full availability also depends on licensed payment networks operating in Syria.

## Community reports

- 2026-03-01 — Verified. Community testing from Syria confirmed that Google Pay is now partially accessible. The informational site at pay.google.com/about loads correctly with full navigation and content. However, the functional Google Wallet service at wallet.google.com returns a 500 server error when attempting to set up a wallet. Status updated from blocked to limited. - 2026-02-24 — Contacted Company. A community volunteer emailed Google's cloud compliance team at google-cloud-compliance@google.com with a formal request to activate Google Pay services in Syria. The email cited the December 2025 OFAC embargo termination, referenced official U.S. Treasury documentation, and included supporting materials from unblocksyria.com/resources. The volunteer noted that multiple global technology companies have already restored services following the sanctions lift.
- 2026-02-15 — Investigated. This is a complicated issue. Google Pay requires a licensed payment provider and card network (Visa/Mastercard) to operate in Syria first. Without local banks issuing compatible payment cards and NFC-enabled terminals at merchants, Google cannot enable Google Pay in the region. Unblocking depends on payment infrastructure entering the Syrian market.
- 2026-02-11 — Verified. Community verification from Syria via DSL: Google Pay confirmed still fully blocked. (evidence: https://api.unblocksyria.com/files/evidence/zv785wqsyacd8ma12ov87b1r/n2pnt3rljlrapf4ujmbei1x0-screenshot-2026-02-11-205646.png)

## Context

These are geo-restrictions the companies applied themselves, not filtering by Syrian ISPs and not a legal requirement. US and EU sanctions on Syria were lifted in 2025. See https://unblocksyria.com/llms.txt for the regulatory summary and https://unblocksyria.com/en/about for citations to the specific orders and regulations.
